Hunter’s Gaze

With frozen rivers and lakes making fishing difficult, this American bald eagle stalks the winter marshes surrounding the Great Salt Lake in northern Utah for mallard ducks to knock out of the air with fisted talons into the marshy waters below, to drown the duck, and then to feed. Robert also notes that during previous winter seasons, he has seen bald eagles hunt adult trumpeter swans, who often keep themselves warm in the dead of winter by hiding their heads under their wings, making them easy and unsuspecting targets for bald eagles, the most dominate raptor of the Northern American Continent.
